What Is Gum Disease?*
When plaque builds up on teeth, tartar forms, and if left long enough bacteria in the plaque can cause the gums to become inflamed and irritated. This stage is called gingivitis and is generally limited to the gums. When it progresses further, it becomes periodontitis, which can lead to invasion of the tooth space, receding gums and potentially leading to bone loss. Teeth can become loose or even be lost, and gums are painful and prone to infection and abscess.
What Treatments Address Gum Disease?

LANAP laser gum and bone regeneration is a laser-assisted procedure to remove unhealthy gum tissue and encourage healthy tissue and bone growth. This procedure requires no incisions or stitches, and targets only unhealthy gum tissue, giving healthy tissues the boost required to promote faster healing. The laser itself is highly customizable, with 7 variable pulse durations, and often, 1-2 treatments is all it takes. No incisions and sutures mean faster recovery for a procedure that patients tolerate well.
Soft tissue grafts use donor graft tissue from the roof of your mouth or a synthetic graft to reinforce your gums in areas where you’ve experienced receding. You’ll need a small incision to place the graft over the recessed gums of one or several teeth, and once complete, your graft provides coverage for overexposed tooth roots, and improves tooth sensitivity and your smile’s aesthetics.
The Pinhole technique halts gingival recession before it can worsen. Less invasive than traditional soft tissue grafts, Dr. Samadian uses tiny instruments to create a pinhole incision in the bridge of gum between each tooth the gently reposition gum tissue and lower it for a healthier gum line. Synthetic grafts are added—less painful than using donor tissue from the roof of your mouth—along with collagen sticks to encourage collagen production and provide structure for your gums.
Frenectomy involves the tiny fold of tissue that connects your upper lip to your jaw. A tight frenulum can cause gum recession and increase spacing between teeth. To correct this, Dr. Samadian uses either a small incision or a laser to remove a portion of the restrictive frenulum. This allows freedom of movement between your lip and jaw, and relieves the pressure on your gums.
Connective tissue grafts add new tissue over the exposed roots of the teeth experiencing the recession to reduce or even prevent tooth sensitivity or tooth loss. The tissue is usually donated from the roof of your mouth and stitched into place over the area of recession.
A free gingival graft also uses tissue from the palate to increase keratinized tissue around the teeth in the recessed gum area. This increases firm, protective gum tissue around the teeth for a healthier gum line and continued tooth stability.
