Advanced Relief from Grinding and Clenching

If you grind your teeth when you’re not eating, you may be experiencing an ailment known as bruxism, which is a type of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder. Certain issues with this joint, which connects your skull and lower jawbone, can eventually impact more than just your teeth. If left unaddressed, this problem can cause discomfort and stiffness in the jaw, frequent headaches, migraines, insomnia, or even depression.

The good news is that Dr. Amin Samadian offers Botox® as a minimally invasive bruxism therapy that comes with little pain and no downtime. If you’re in San Francisco, the East Bay, or the nearby areas, Dr. Samadian and his team are ready to help you find relief from unnecessary grinding and clenching.

Impressive Relief, Proactive Support

BOTOX is an injectable neurotoxin that has been FDA-approved for the treatment of bruxism, headaches, and migraines, and is extensively used by neurologists and pain specialists. By relaxing certain muscles in your face and jaw, BOTOX for TMJ soothes any soreness associated with bruxism while also relieving pressure on the teeth and preventing any further damage. As an added bonus, this therapy also effectively “reprograms” the brain, teaching it not to overuse these muscles so you can avoid further clenching in the future. Dr. Samadian and his team will usually prescribe BOTOX for clenching and bruxism and might combine it with:

  • Medications
  • Mouthguards
  • Stress management methods
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic techniques
  • Other treatments to more fully combat your condition

“Dr. Samadian is patient, and listens to all your concerns carefully before treatment. In my case, I get Botox for my masseter (jaw muscle that controls teeth grinding), as well as Botox for my forehead. Additionally, his staff is professional, extremely polite, and accommodating. His office itself is well appointed and clean.”

Addressing Grinding and Clenching with BOTOX

Dr. Samadian will carefully examine your head, face, and neck so he can isolate the specific muscles that are causing your issues, and determine precisely how much BOTOX is needed to treat your symptoms.

The main muscles that are associated with bruxism are the Masseter, the Medial and Lateral Pterygoid, and the Temporalis muscles.

The injection will impair the muscle in question, essentially teaching your brain to stop misusing it. The treatment is careful to only reduce overuse (hypertrophy) of your muscles, so you’ll still be able to eat and chew properly without breaking or chipping your teeth. You’ll be in and out of the office in 30 minutes or less and can return to your routine right after your treatment.

You’ll experience your full effects somewhere between three days and two weeks after your injections. As such, Dr. Samadian and his team always begin with the minimum dose, before going on to re-evaluate your progress after two weeks. This enables Dr. Samadian to accurately assess whether or not any of your muscles require more BOTOX units.

A Highly Tolerable Treatment

A very fine needle will be used to inject the medication during your treatment, so you won’t have to worry about any severe pain or discomfort. Most patients find this treatment to be minimally uncomfortable, and Dr. Samadian will help with a topical anesthetic before your injections.

Free Yourself from Grinding and Clenching

While BOTOX is not a cure for bruxism, it offers comprehensive and effective control over the symptoms for up to a year in most cases. Alongside your BOTOX injections, Dr. Samadian will help you control your TMJ issues with additional maintenance techniques, which can help subsequent treatments require fewer units of BOTOX.

Thanks to his holistic approach, Dr. Samadian has extensive experience addressing TMJ-related issues, and he’s eager to help you find the relief you’ve been seeking. His focus on comprehensive dentistry is designed to address the root cause of your dental issues, so you can enjoy a world-class level of advanced oral health.
