What Are Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are designed to be placed over the surface of your teeth. They are very thin shells of durable material that look just like natural teeth, only they are brighter, even and beautifully shaped. Each porcelain veneer is custom made to the shape of your natural teeth. Veneers can reshape teeth that are smaller or incorrectly shaped, and give you a result that hugely upgrades the color, size and appearance of your teeth and smile.

Porcelain veneers are tough and durable, which is one of the reasons they are so popular. Veneers resist staining and last for 7-10 years or longer before they need to be replaced.

How are Porcelain Veneers Installed?

The first step of your procedure is a thorough consultation and exam with Dr. Samadian. If he determines you’re a candidate for porcelain veneers, the next step is having your veneers custom manufactured to suit your mouth and the unique shape of your smile. Dr. Samadian may need to perform gum contouring to help achieve your best results.

A small amount of enamel will be removed from your teeth to ensure there is less sensitivity during the porcelain veneer implantation process. When the teeth are ready, Dr. Samadian will bond the veneers to your natural teeth with a special dental adhesive. You will be able to enjoy instantaneous, dramatic improvement and a brilliant, white smile.

The veneers procedure is completed in two office visits that take about two hours each. Once the treatment is complete, you can return to work or your usual activities the same day.

Some patients choose to receive sedation during their veneers procedure. If you choose this option, arrange for someone to drive you home, and be sure to give yourself the rest of the day to recuperate. By the next day, you will be able to return to your usual activities or work.

Your porcelain veneers will look like perfectly shaped, healthy, natural teeth. Like natural teeth, veneers allow light to shine through them. This gives your teeth a sparkling shine and provides a natural, bright smile.

How to Make Your New Porcelain Veneers Last

Before installing porcelain veneers, Dr. Samadian will do everything possible to ensure your veneers last for the long term. Because teeth shift over time, he will first correct your bite if it’s needed. This will help your porcelain veneers remain beautiful for a longer period of time.

Once your veneers are installed, care for them the way you would your natural teeth. Be sure not to use your teeth as tools to open bottles or chip bags or to chew on pen caps or fingernails.

Some tips to keep your veneers in the best shape possible:

  • Avoid smoking and other tobacco products
  • Rinse your mouth after drinking dark-colored beverages
  • Brush and floss your teeth daily
  • If you grind your teeth, wear a mouthguard at night
  • Have professional cleanings every six months, and have a yearly dental exam

Veneers FAQ

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Typically, veneers last approximately 5-10 years. If they are properly cared for, they can last much longer.

How many veneers do I need?

During your consultation for porcelain veneers in the East Bay area, Dr. Samadian will help determine how many porcelain veneers are needed.

How do I care for my veneers?

Brush and floss your teeth daily, wear a bite guard at night, and avoid using your teeth as tools.

How much do veneers cost?

The cost of porcelain veneers varies depending on where and on how many teeth they are done.

How do I get veneers to match my other teeth?

To achieve a uniform smile, most people choose to get their veneers in a whiter shade than their natural teeth, then have teeth whitening done to match their natural teeth to the veneers.

Does the process hurt?

You will be numbed during the procedure. Afterward there is usually little or no discomfort, but if eight or more veneers were done, you may feel soreness of the gums.

What can I eat and what foods should I avoid?

Start with softer foods the first few days as you get used to your new bite position. After several weeks there is no limitation on what you eat.

What habits should I avoid or stop?

Stop biting your nails or using your teeth as tools. Don’t do anything to put undue stress on the veneers. Otherwise, freely enjoy your veneers!
