What are root canal treatments?

The main purpose of a root canal treatment is to extract the diseased pulp (the part in the middle of the tooth that is made of living, connective tissue) and the nerve of your tooth. It can stop you from losing your original tooth and improve your overall dental health.

Reasons for root canal treatments

Dr. Amin Samadian’s San Francisco team may advise you have an endodontic treatment if the pulp of your tooth becomes infected, inflamed, or expires. The most common signs that you may need a root canal include tooth discoloration, tooth pain when you chew or bite down on something, overly-sensitive teeth, a persistent gum sore, or a lesion that displays on an x-ray or a Cone Beam CT scan.

What do root canal treatments involve?

Before the treatment begins a 3D cone beam CT scan will get taken to show all the roots and canals of the tooth and show if the root canal is affected or not. During your root canal, Dr. Amin Samadian’s San Francisco team will extract the infected pulp from your tooth. Next, he’ll thoroughly clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth. Once he’s removed all of the infected pulp, he will use a rubber-like material to fill the opening. Lastly, Dr. Amin Samadian’s team will restore your tooth with a crown or filling, done the same day using his on-site dental lab.

Does a root canal hurt?

Most patients are concerned that receiving an endodontic treatment will be extremely painful. Since Dr. Amin Samadian’s San Francisco team uses numbing and anesthesia medication and gentle tools, you should experience very little pain during your treatment.

What results will I see?

After your root canal treatment, your tooth will be saved, allowing you to have more efficient chewing and a regular biting force and sensation. A root canal can also maintain a natural appearance while protecting the rest of your teeth from excessive wear or stain.
