CAMBRA Protocol

Stop cavities in their tracks

Cavities, also called caries, are damaged sections in the thick surface of your teeth that shift into tiny holes or openings. They are usually the consequence of inadequate dental hygiene, bacteria in your mouth, your nutrition & components of your saliva, your immune system, or medications.

Dr. Amin Samadian and his San Francisco team use the Caries Management by Risk Assessment (or CAMBRA) protocol as a portion of his preventative dentistry to manage cavities. The purpose of the CAMBRA protocol is to assess your risk for caries and decide on the best preventive and therapeutic treatments to prevent and reverse the dental decay.

CAMBRA Protocol Orinda

What is the CAMBRA protocol?

Developed by UCSF School of Dentistry after nearly 20 years of thorough study, also known as an evidence-based protocol, CAMBRA is intended to prevent, reverse, and/or manage caries before they lead to lasting tooth damage. This cavity prevention procedure considers the entire caries disease process instead of solely its progression. Instead of emphasizing restorative care, just like Dr. Samadian’s San Francisco practice, CAMBRA focuses on early intervention and prevention.

Reasons for the CAMBRA protocol

Dr. Amin Samadian and his San Francisco team are firm advocates of the CAMBRA protocol because it’s an ideal way for his patients to stop cavities before they form as well as to obtain and sustain the best possible oral health. Prevention is always better than repair.

What does the CAMBRA protocol involve?

During the CAMBRA protocol, Dr. Amin Samadian’s San Francisco team will assess your risk level for caries on a scale of 0 to 5 based on the bacterial activity of the saliva, the ph of the saliva and the clinical evidence of decay, your history of dental and medical treatments, and other risk factors associated with decay (medicines, habits, diet, etc.). Once your risk level has been established, he will work with you to design the perfect treatment plan. If you are on the higher end of the scale of risk for caries, his plan will usually involve treating the bacterial infection that could cause them and prevent them from reappearing.

Is the CAMBRA protocol painful?

The CAMBRA protocol does not cause any pain. You can just relax in your chair and let Dr. Amin Samadian’s San Francisco team of specialists assess your risk level for cavities.
