BOTOX for Grinding & Clenching

Ease teeth grinding

If you grind your teeth when you’re not eating, you may have an ailment called bruxism. Constant teeth grinding and clenching can cause your teeth to wear down over time. They can even become shorter and eventually break. Tooth grinding affects more than just your teeth, too – you may face discomfort and stiffness in the jaw, frequent headaches, migraines, insomnia, or even depression

The good news is that Dr. Amin Samadian offers a non-invasive bruxism therapy at his San Francisco office that comes with little pain and no downtime. BOTOX can help relieve the muscle soreness that comes with bruxism and can remove the pressure on the teeth due to grinding that can break teeth. It will also reprogram the brain and teaches it not to overuse the muscles.

What is BOTOX for grinding and clenching?

BOTOX is a neurotoxin injectable that is often utilized to temporarily treat wrinkles that arise when you make certain facial expressions. It has also been FDA-approved to treat bruxism, headaches, and migraines and is extensively used by neurologists and pain specialists. Depending on what muscles are producing the issue, Dr. Samadian evaluates all the muscles of the head, face, and neck so he can determine precisely how much BOTOX each muscle needs to treat the symptoms. The main muscles that are employed with bruxism are Masseter, Medial and Lateral Pterygoid, and Temporalis.

Reasons for BOTOX for grinding and clenching

Dr. Amin Samadian and his team will usually prescribe BOTOX as the ideal treatment and maintenance protocol for bruxism and might combine it with medications, mouth guards, stress management methods, physical therapy, chiropractic techniques, and other treatments for bruxism to fully combat the condition.

What does BOTOX for grinding and clenching involve?

During a bruxism treatment, Dr. Amin Samadian and his team will thoroughly assess all the muscles involved, trigger points, and referred pain areas to ensure he injects the BOTOX correctly. Once they have a treatment plan, they will inject BOTOX into the muscles that are involved. The injection will impair the muscle and teach your brain not to misuse it. This weakening will only reduce the amount of overuse (hypertrophy) of the muscles, so you can still function, eat, and chew properly without breaking or chipping any of your teeth. You’ll be in and out of the office in 30 minutes or less and can go right back to work after your treatment. It will take between 3 days and 2 weeks for the effects to fully show, that’s why Dr. Samadian and his team always begin with the minimum dose and will re-evaluate after two weeks to see if any of the muscles require more BOTOX units.

Does BOTOX for grinding and clenching hurt?

A very fine needle is used to inject the medication during this jaw clenching treatment so you don’t have to worry about any severe pain or discomfort. Most patients find it to be very tolerable, especially when Dr. Amin Samadian and his team use a topical anesthetic before the injection. Sometimes, Dr. Samadian’s team also uses Lidocaine as an anesthetic in his trigger point therapy of the shoulder.

What results will I see?

While BOTOX is not a cure for bruxism, you may notice it can control its symptoms better than other treatments and it’s effective all the time. The results of this teeth grinding treatment will usually last for about a year, and in the following years, if the other maintenance techniques that are recommended by Dr. Samadian and his team are used, the subsequent treatments will require fewer units of BOTOX.
